Routt County Youth Council: Local youth provide opportunities for community engagement

The final months of 2021 have been a wild ride for much of the world, but the teens behind the Routt County Youth Council have been keeping busy as the year ended in a stutter.

In early December, the youth organized a hygiene and food drive to support Lift Up of Routt County. From designing donation boxes to spreading the food drive throughout the community, members of the local Steamboat Springs Youth Council have been following the project diligently.

Working with the Soda Creek Elementary School Youth Council, a few members of the Routt County Youth Council created signs to announce the food drive and spread the word. With popular community drop box locations like Old Town Hot Springs, City Hall, Soda Creek Elementary, Sleeping Giant School, Boys & Girls Club, and the Bud Werner Memorial Library, the drive collected an amazing amount of food and hygiene items. , and was a great success.

While community support is one of the two primary goals of the Youth Council, the second is to organize pro-social events for teens.

The Youth Council has been busy planning and organizing a bowling night for the teens. Held December 10 at Snow Bowl Steamboat, Council members coordinated a fun and relaxed event for over 130 Routt County youth.

It served as a winter kickoff and last hurrah before finals week. Throughout the evening, a gift card and a pair of Airpods were given to the bowler with the highest score. With free bowling, food and drink, the event was a huge success and could be seen in the sea of happy faces at the event.

Members of the Routt County Youth Council have been busy in December, planning and hosting pro-social and service events to support the Steamboat Springs community. Now that it’s 2022, they’re back and planning new events to engage young people this spring and summer.
