Vanderbilt University’s Frist Center for Autism and Innovation to be Recognized for Workplace Achievements in Neurodiversity and Autism on October 15

WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, United States, September 14, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ – The American Association for Access, Equity and Diversity (AAAED), an organization of equal opportunity, diversity and affirmative action, announced that the Frist Center for Autism and Innovation, Engineering Technologies and Workplace Transformation – Inspired by Neurodiversity, at Vanderbilt University, will host the Edward M. Kennedy Community Service Award at the association’s annual awards ceremony. The awards ceremony will take place on Friday October 15, 2021 during the 47th AAAED National Conference and Awards Ceremony (October 7-15, 2021), with the theme âReflect, Reset and Progress Towards Justice , equity and inclusive excellence â. The awards show will run virtually from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. ET. The program is open to the press. âWe are delighted to honor the Frist Center for its contributions to innovative engineering research on autism-related neuroscience and the opportunities created by a neurodiverse workforce,â said Dr. Richard Anthony Baker, president of AAAED.
The Edward M. Kennedy Award is presented to an individual or organization demonstrating outstanding community service. The award is named after the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA), who was a champion of equal opportunities and the rights of persons with disabilities. Previous recipients of the award include Disability: IN (2020), Deb Dagit, President, Deb Dagit Diversity, LLC; and BOSMA Enterprises, Navigating Blindness (2019); The Southern Poverty Law Center (2018), The Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission (2017), Wright State University (2016), Georgia State University (2015) and the Honorable Kathleen Martinez, US Department of Labor (2014).
The Frist Center for Autism and Innovation, Engineering Technologies and Workplace Transformation – Inspired by Neurodiversity, at Vanderbilt University School of Engineering, brings together engineers, academics and researchers with disabilities as well as experts in neuroscience and in education to understand, maximize and promote neurodiverse talent. From an understanding of autism and neurodiversity based on strengths – rather than deficits – the Center sees opportunities for innovation in technology and in workplace practices.
The main areas of interest for the work of the Frist Center include:
â¢ invent and commercialize new technologies that allow people with autism and other neurodiverse people to find jobs, succeed at work and reach their full potential;
â¢ study and understand neurodiverse capacities, and invent and commercialize algorithms and systems inspired by these capacities;
â¢ develop policies, tools, training and workplace practices that recognize and recruit neurodiverse people and talents into the workforce;
â¢ demonstrate, document and disseminate a community approach â including employers, self-advocates, researchers, policy makers, agencies and organizations â to simultaneously improve business outcomes and the quality of life of people with autism.
The Frist Center for Autism and Innovation contributes to the school’s Inclusion EngineeringSM mission through research in neurodiversity, workplace practices and related fields.
